A2.0 AT INTERNATIONAL MEETING ON PROTECTED AREAS IN THE AMAZON REGION

From February 2 to 5, 2021, the 5th edition of the Meeting of Natural Protected Area Managers of Acre and the 1st International Meeting of Protected Area Managers of the South American Amazon were held simultaneously. The events were organized by the State Secretariat for the Environment of Acre (SEMA - AC) with the support of several partners, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in South America.

The meeting addressed issues related to the effectiveness of the management of Natural Protected Areas (NPAs) in South America and the strengthening of the State System of NPAs of Acre (Seanp).

For the technical coordinator of the Amazonia 2.0 project in Brazil, Carolle Alarcon, the conference was an important platform for connection and dialogue. "Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the round tables took place virtually, which broadened participation and gave us the opportunity to connect and interact with experts from several Latin American countries on topics relevant to the management of protected areas, such as the challenges for strengthening local governance, financial sustainability and regional integration, relevant to the transboundary region of Acre.

On the third day of the event, February 4, Carolle participated in the debate by sharing the actions and results of the Amazon 2.0 initiative in the Acre intervention territories - the Mamoadate and Alto Purús Indigenous Lands and the Chandless State Park - as well as the perspectives for action for 2021.

Carolle was joined by César Altamirano, responsible for Coordination, Programming, Projection and Financial Sustainability of the Bolivian Protected Areas System, who presented the perspectives and challenges of NPA management in Bolivia.

Held through the Zoom platform and broadcast live on the Secretariat's YouTube, the meetings brought together more than 100 people per day, including experts and representatives of public agencies and civil organizations. The forum has established itself as an important meeting point for institutions working on the conservation and socio-environmental development agenda in the region.
